Let’s be honest, Jordan Belfort or Francis Underwood are not likable fictional characters. Then, why do we still sympathize so much with them when we would normally hate them and show no interest at all in what they do? Jennine Lanouette, screenwriting instructor, reveals the secret in this video.

Writers only have to engineer a scene at the beginning of the story showing characters displaying a power disadvantage and the audience will be immediately on board.
