I'm going to go out on a really, really long limb and assume that this wasn't the safest restraint system for kids in cars. But HOLY SHIT does it look fun. I was clearly born in the wrong era. [Vintage Ads via Boing Boing]
I remember when laws requiring seat belts for anyone were not around yet. There were cars with a buzzer that would stay on unless the seat belt was engaged. We would always have the buckles clipped in, but just sit on the belt. These were just lap belts. As kids my brother and I would fight over who got to sit in the front seat. having us sit in the back was never an act of safety. The back seat was a playground on long trips. Car seats weren't common. I know I never sat in one. And I'm under 40.
Most of us made it through alive. But that device would have surely saved me from a few stitches and an L-shaped scar at my hairline that I received after my mom having to slam on the brakes when I was about 3.
