Our latest look at the next chapter in Pacific Rim’s robot-vs-monster punchup is here, and it’s promising to bring us plenty of new action with the film’s next generation of Jaegers. But it also gives us some more intriguing hints as to just why the Kaiju have returned, stronger and deadlier than ever.
The new trailer gives us a little more time with Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), who is very much trying to avoid living in the shadow of his father Stacker (Idris Elba, from the first Pacific Rim). He’s a reckless partygoer by nature, but when he’s called into action to continue his father’s legacy—by none other than one of the heroes of the first movie, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—it seems like Jake is going to more than gung-ho at the prospect of being the leader of a new generation of giant robot pilots.
But as well as some awesome robot action, this new trailer offers more than a few intriguing mysteries—who is piloting the mysterious Jaeger that seems to be battling its fellow mecha instead of the Kaiju? Why on earth would someone want to re-open the gateway for armies of giant monsters to come devastate the world again? But hey, we’re fine leaving those questions unanswered for now while we watch the pretty robots fight.
Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters March 23.
