Without a doubt, this is one of the coolest airplane videos I have ever seen. Thanks to the magic of telephoto lenses, the moon in this infrared clip looks impossibly gigantic. The fact that a KC-10 tanker is refueling another KC-10 tanker make the entire thing feel unreal—as in “I had a hard time believing this wasn’t some kind of fake” unreal.
Way cool. The plane nerd in me tells me I have to point this out though: this must be dawn or dusk - the sun is up somewhere as the shadows on the stabilisers, wings, tail and engine don’t match the light source (the moon). The top-left has a box around “IR” but this is not a thermal image - shadows don’t show in long-wave or medium-wave IR - and there’s no thermal signature to the engines or heat plumes.
Still way cool though.
