The Simputer, the Indian PDA that aimed to provide low-cost computing to the masses, has hit the streets after a three-year delay. Although the Simputer originally had some innovate ideas, such as letting different users store their data on cheap, swappable memory cards and village-based software packages, it’s unclear if the $240 monochrome PDA (a more expensive color version is available) is really that much better for Indians than anything else. It would seem that what would set the Simputer apart is software and Indian-specific design, including support for Hindi and Kannada input. It will be interesting to contrast within-India reviews of this relatively-underpowered device to those from without. Thanks to everyone that sent this in.
