This year’s movie theater slump has finally ended with the release of summer blockbusters and animated films, which have relieved the industry with huge hits. And leave it to Disney and Pixar to have supercharged ticket sales with the release of Inside Out 2, which is now officially the highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide.
It took just two weeks for it to outgross its predecessor Inside Out, and went on to top pretty much the rest of the Pixar slate as we’ve gotten deeper into the summer. Today it finally hit $1.462 billion to date at the global box office; that makes it a bigger success than 2019’s Frozen 2, Disney’s still-ongoing biggest franchise, which pulled in $1.453 billion.
In only six weeks, Inside Out 2 has “moved into the #13 spot in the all-time industry global box office rankings,” according to Disney. Additionally, “the film also crossed $600 million at the domestic box office yesterday and has remained in the top three titles throughout its run. Inside Out 2 has brought in $861 million internationally.” And it’s not done yet; the film has yet to be released in Japan (it’s opening there next week), but it already has broken other records including becoming the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion globally, in only 19 days. It’s also the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date, and the only one to cross $1 billion.
