If you can’t get in through the front door, go around back. Intel has embedded DRM into their new Pentium D/945 chipset combo. Described simply as a few features that improve on Microsoft’s Janus system—which we’re assuming are a few encryption tools and some other innocuous stuff—this doesn’t sound quite like the locked down hardware that we all were expecting a few years ago, but it’s close.
Fair use is fair use, and embedding DRM in hardware is a dangerous route. While Joe Dell might pick up a new PC no matter what, the geeks are going to get testy when they have to write around a bunch of weird, undocumented features. Tread carefully, Intel.
