The Washington Post is running a story about the Sharper Image’s ‘Ionic Breeze’ air fresheners, passing on information from Consumer Reports that details a dangerously high level of incidental ozone generation when using the device. It’s not just the Ionic Breeze that has the problem (some other similar ‘ionizers’ also dump excess ozone) but with over 1 million (proudly!) sold, The Sharper Image seems to be bearing the brunt of the criticism. Perhaps that’s because of the libel suit they filed against Consumer Reports in 2003 over similar findings, which was tossed out by a federal judge.
Anyway, if you’ve got an ionizing air cleaner, the article is a must-read. Excess ozone isn’t healthy at all.
