As bored as you might be with the breathless coverage of Banksy and his "takeover of New York," there might be one reason to catch the HBO documentary on the street artist. Over at CityLab, Kriston Capps has an intriguing theory after watching the film: Banksy is a probably a woman.
There are a lot of interesting points raised in Capps' article which the film seems to provoke. Girls and woman feature prominently into Banksy's work, more than any other street artist by far. There's a level of nuance that sets Banksy apart from the (mostly) male world of graffiti. And in Exit Through the Gift Shop, the Banksy-directed movie that tells the story of his fractured relationship with fellow street artist Mr. Brainwash (which you may or may not believe), Banksy is played by a man, which is clearly to throw people off, argues Capps. While "Banksy hunters" have proposed that Banksy is a woman, or perhaps a group of people which may include women, this film might make a case for it better than ever before.
Banksy Does New York will air Monday, November 17 but those with HBO Go can watch it right now. If you've seen it, do tell us what you think. [HBO Go]
