The Dude has nabbed the rights to the influential novel The Giver by Lois Lowry. Bridges hopes to play the title role — the one person chosen to feel for the whole of a future community.

Variety is reporting that Bridges is ready to produce and star in this movie adaptation of the book. He's quoted as saying:

I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges; however, at 61 years old, I feel the time is right for me to do it.

Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog) is attached to pen the script, which means that they've hired someone who understands the underlying darkness in this dystopian Young Adult novel. Fingers crossed they nail the sled scenes (as it's easily the most important moment in the entire story).
