Movie fans rejoice! The obvious cinematic tale of John McAfee allegedly doing drugs, having sex, and going out of his mind in Belize will become a movie. Johnny Depp will play John McAfee, an obvious choice. But how will the A-lister manage to look as decrepit as the anti-virus software mogul? Bath salts, probably.
Deadline casually reported the news of Johnny Depp starring in a film about John McAfee’s life. Awkwardly titled King of the Jungle, the new movie will explore the time Wired writer Joshua Davis went to visit McAfee, when he was supposedly holed up in his compound, hiding from authorities, and surrounding himself with teenagers in bikinis. The tale also included stories about McAfee and drugs, though the oddball security dude denied this. Depp, of course, is no stranger to portraying drug-addled celebrity somethings: The erstwhile Edward Scissorhands famously portrayed writer slash badass Hunter S. Thompson in the late ‘90s classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Depp would later spend $3 million to fire Thompson’s ashes out of a cannon.
For now, details of the new movie are scarce. It will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa of Bad Santa fame (sure, why not!) and written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who recently won widespread acclaim for the Netflix miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. It’s unclear who will play Wired writer Joshua Davis, although director Wes Anderson is the obvious choice. No, seriously look:
