Add The Spirit to the list of new and recent movies keeping CGI in its place. In his latest blog entry, The Spirit director Frank Miller says CGI master Stu Maschwitz taught him that CGI can’t substitute for human actors and dramatic realism. “CGI people aren’t people. They’re constructs,” Miller insists. “Even when I wanted to go for an impossible, across-the-city camera move, [Maschwitz] balked, saying it would ‘look digital.'” So The Spirit will have “abundant” CGI that “you will find elegant… or invisible,” says Miller.
