We were still reacting to Lifetime’s new horror-themed Shakespeare anthology, A Midsummer’s Nightmare when we heard about another genre project from the channel: Sea Change, about a science-minded teenage girl who moves to a tiny island, where she finds drama, romance, and… sea monsters?

Sea Change is based on Aimee Friedman’s YA best-seller, and will get a two-hour pilot before potentially becoming a weekly series. Here’s what Deadline says about it:

Pilot Sea Change follows a strong 17-year-old girl who, after the death of her father, moves to a small Nantucket-like island to live with her estranged mother. There she is pulled into classic small town rivalries and clashes with her mother, but quickly learns the depth of those conflicts when the island legend about dangerous Sea Walkers appears to be true, presenting a mystery for her and her family.

Well, “new girl in a mysterious small town” isn’t the worst way to start a story, and this one at least doesn’t appear to involve vampires. (In Friedman’s book, the place is called “Selkie Island,” which seems like a big hint as to what lurks in the nearby waters.) The pilot is being written by Liz Sczudlo, who’s also worked on 90210, Awkward., Switched at Birth, and The Following.
