Live from CES: Digital Experience

We hit the Digital Experience press event last night, and while we didn’t see quite as many surprises as we had hoped, there were a few products that we were glad to finally see up close, as well as prototypes of some promising new gadgets that will hopefully make it to market later this year.

Beyond’s “connected” Bread Maker.

Creative’s personal audio and video player running Microsoft’s new Portable Media Center. The best part about the Portable Media Center is that it can be programmed to sync up with a Media Center PC and have recordings of your favorite TV shows automatically transferred onto it.

A new 40GB MP3 player from Auvi that, if it is for real, would be smaller, thinner, and lighter than the iPod. The SA1500 is supposed to also have a battery life of 20 hours and use USB 2.0 for transferring files from a PC. They didn’t have a working model on hand, so we’re a bit skeptical, but the company claims that this’ll be out by May.

The new ApeXtreme PC Gaming Console from Apex.

ViewSonic’s new A/V component-like Media Center PC.

The ZVUE personal video player, which doesn’t have a hard drive but instead plays video files stored on SD and MMC Flash memory cards. The rep we spoke to said that the ZVUE should support playback of DivX (or was it MPEG4? We’ll have to double-check) within a few weeks.
