MacWorld Keynote Notes

Reading time 3 minutes

MacWorld Keynote has started. Updates as we get them.

MacMerc has a Live Feed Page, as does MacRumors. PowerbookCentral has major coverage, too.

New iMac is best-selling Mac. No Tiger update to OSX today. Have to wait until Q2 2005.

Jobs has live, onscreen bug. Somewhere, Bill Gates cackles.

Quicktime 7 has HD support, surround sound, H.264 codec and full MPEG4 support. iChat AV uses h.264 for video chat. Possible to see every stretch mark on internet hookers.

2005 “Year of HD Video.” Final Cut Express HD announced. $300 in Feb.

iLife upgraded all around, MPEG4 and RAW support among other bits. Are they actually using the term ‘Ken Burns’ effect? Is everything sepia?

iMovie supports HD and can edit HD, up to 1080i. Your family reunion is now boring in four times as many pixels. Personal note: invest in companies making HD camcorders. Also, start saving money to invest.

Sony prez. on stage, hamming it with Jobs. Later they will make out like Arkansas cousins but both will remain unsatisfied. I am confused by trying to connect the many ways Sony and Apple both compete and do not compete, and make some tea.

Apple stock down like $3. He better announce some hardware quick.

Holy smokes, GarageBand looks hot. Too bad it’s not our bailiwick or I’d tell you about it. Let’s just say, you’re about to get a faceful of rock from yours truly, even if you don’t have a face.

iTunes, on the other hand, is our shtick, and it has no stated upgrade in iLife ’05. I guess that means it is perfect, until it isn’t.

iWorks is a ground up AppleWorks successor that integrates with OSX and iLife. So, you know, not an Office replacement, I guess.

Apple stock picking up. People like Apple again. Sacrificial children removed from over altar flames by Phil Schiller, only slightly crisp.

Stripped down Mac, more affordable. Headless Mac. Mac mini! DVI and VGA, ethernet, FireWire and USB2. Tiny little thing. “BYODKM” Bring your own display, keyboard, and mouse. Two models. 1.25 GHz G4, 256 RAM == $500, faster proc and 80GB HDD (other had 40GB) $599. Available Jan 22. I guess technically this makes this the first Mac not to come with a one-button mouse.

iPod… waiting for it. Damn, sales figures. 10 million iPods sold so far, 8 million in 2004. iPod top 3 of 5 Amazon holiday products. 400 Accessories.

Next generation BMW ipod interface out this year. In 2005 interfaces for Mercedes, Nissan, Volvo, and Scion from the factory, as well as Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

Motorola phone with iTunes player software on them this spring.

One more thing… iPod at 65% share (of what? oh, total market. So up a skotch?). Mini worked to eat flash player market share. They want the flash market, too. They want the whole kit and caboodle, hard drive and flash. Jobs talks smack about flash players, many people secretly and not so secretly touching themselves.

iPod Shuffle! Has a click wheel, les than 1 oz. weight, no display, play/pause in middle, vol up volume down, previous/next. Always in shuffle or going through single playlist. 12 hour rechargable USB2.0, PC or Mac (obvs)., white, supplied lanyard.

Whoa. 512MB version for $100, 1GB for $149. “We’re really serious about this.” Can also use as a flash drive. Shipping today, along with accessories. Apple… finish him!

Okay, that’s it! Don’t miss our pages full of pictures of both of these sleek new gadgets.
