Movie awards season is upon us and the National Board of Review is first out of the gate with a huge, but amazing, surprise. They’ve named Mad Max: Fury Road the best picture of the year.

Big budget studio fare rarely gets that kind of accolade but almost everyone who saw Mad Max loved it and hailed it as something truly remarkable. This award only confirms that, and shoots the film back into the conversation for Oscars as we get closer to those nominations.

Now, does this guarantee anything? No. Odds are almost every critics group that follows will pick a more traditional winner, but Mad Max winning at least one is a win for War Boys (and Girls) everywhere.

Also on the big budget genre side, the National Board of Review named Ridley Scott best director for The Martian, Matt Damon best actor for that film and Drew Goddard best adapted screenplay.

Here’s their full list of the best films of 2015, after Mad Max. Head to the below link for all the winners.

Bridge of Spies

Creed

The Hateful Eight

Inside Out

The Martian

Room

Sicario

Spotlight

Straight Outta Compton
