What’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars? We don’t yet know specifically, but it seems it could potentially include Nova.

Deadline reports that writer Michael Waldron, co-creator of Hulu’s Chad Powers and writer of Marvel Studios’ Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is currently working on a script for a movie starring the cosmic character. The trade says that “the project is still in early development but that Waldron is on board to pen the script with an eye to directing the project if it moves forward.”

io9 reached out to Marvel Studios for comment or clarification but had not yet heard back as of publication. We’ll update this piece if we hear back.

Nova has been around since the late 1960s, with the most popular version, whose real name is Richard Rider, debuting in 1976’s The Man Called Nova #1, written by original creator Marv Wolfman with art by John Buscema. Rider was a normal kid who was randomly selected to be a member of the Nova Corps as the rest of them were dying. Quickly embracing his newfound powers, he jumps into action and becomes a charismatic, powerful force for justice across the galaxy.

Fans have been clamoring for the character to join the MCU for almost a decade now, with movement on a project first seeping into the world back in 2022. At that point, Sabir Pirzada, one of the writers on Moon Knight, was developing the project, and we didn’t know if it was a movie or TV show. Now, we know this version from Waldron is a movie.

Waldon is also one of the writers working on Avengers: Doomsday, which is out in December. So if anyone knows how things are going to play out in the MCU in the next few years, it’s him. The development of Nova also hints that in addition to the inevitable addition of the X-Men, the cosmic side of the MCU will continue, too. They did promise Peter Quill would be back after all, right?
