So I almost skimmed past this while reading a rumor about the MPx (that I’ll talk about after the jump), but boy, I’m glad I didn’t. According to information gleamed from the FCC site, Motorola’s new CN620 clamshell is coming to town, and by town I mean ‘the town where you can transfer Wi-Fi Voice-Over-IP calls to GSM, also known as Awesomeville.’ The quad-band GSM phone supports all three major Wi-Fi standards and is targeted towards corporate users.
Our sources at Motorola said to expect an official announcement later this month.
More about the CN620 and the MPx after the jump.
So from a geeky ‘future of wireless calling’ perspective, the CN620 looks extremely hot. Why? Because if it works as advertised, you should be able to use your CN620 as a SIP (Wi-Fi) handset at the office or local hotspot, then while you’re still talking wander out of the range of the Wi-Fi and continue talking as your phone seamlessly transfers you to the regular cellular network. That is, of course, if it works as advertised. I’m realizing that I’m getting a bit too worked up about a phone that I’ve just barely skimmed over the specs. I’ll dig in a little deeper and then, more than likely, start gushing again.
Oh, and it pains me just to think about it, but Slashphone heard from a guy who knows a guy who knows a Cingular Regional Manager that says the Motorola MPx (aka MPx 300) won’t be released until Q1 2005. Maybe that’s just for Cingular, maybe that’s for everybody, maybe it’s just some stupid rumor that someone made up. My guess is it’s poo poo (or caa caa), but as a hard hitting internet journalist, it’s not my job to decide.
