Remember the insane collection of Alien-inspired concept designs District 9 director Neill Blomkampunleashed on the internet alast month?Turns out, Fox would actually let Blomkamp make that Aliens movie, but he’s not biting.
Uproxxsat down with the director and asked him why he would tease the Internet with such gorgeous concept art and wild ideas without any follow up. What they found out was yes, these designs were a part of a more cohesive idea for an Alien film, a movie Blomkamp originally dreamed up sans Sigourney Weaver. But after working with her in Chappie, he changed his mind. And he developed a whole movie, so why isn’t it in production or pre-production? Because Blomkamp isn’t ready.
And now the most frustrating (but totally understandable) exchange of words:
Someone at Fox should listen to you about this.
That’s not the problem, actually.
What’s the problem?
Me. I’m the problem. Fox, they would make it. Like, tomorrow. They would make it.
So if you called right now and said, “OK, done.”
Yes. Then it would happen.
Would it be your vision, or do they have their own ideas?
No, I think it would work out.
Then just do it.
I know, I just have to mentally agree with that.
It’s his idea; he shouldn’t have to do it if he doesn’t feel like the timing is right, or (more likely) if he no longer trusts Hollywood. That being said, we’d really really really like to see these designs come to life because even just staring at the image of Sigourney in the space jockey helmet is better than Prometheus.
