We’ve done the live-action adaptations. We’ve done the villain-centric takes. And now, we’re onto the side characters. This November, Netflix is releasing Steps, a twist on the iconic story of Cinderella told from the point of view of the evil stepsisters.
Only, they don’t like being called “evil.” Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu provide the voices for Lilith and Margot, Cinderella’s stepsisters who steal the wand of the Fairy Godmother (voiced by Bette Midler) and break the fated story with horrible consequences. They’ll then have to team up with Cinderella (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) to make sure everyone lives happily ever after. It’s a fun concept with a great cast, and here’s the first trailer.
Along with Wong, Hsu, Midler, and Seyfried, Steps features the voices of Nikki Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, and Damian Priest. Not a bad little cast. And from that fun teaser trailer, it certainly seems like there’s some potential here.
The film is directed by Alyce Tzue, who is making her feature directorial debut, alongside John Ripa, a long-time Disney animator going all the way back to The Lion King. Most recently, though, he was a co-director on the underrated Raya and the Last Dragon.
Steps looks and sounds like it could be fun, but it’ll be interesting to see which film Netflix ends up backing as we get into awards season. Last year, everyone thought In Your Dreams was going to be the streamer’s shining star, but then KPop Demon Hunters came around. This year, Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn, coming in December, seems like the best bet, but Steps looks pretty great, In Waves is getting a lot of buzz, and Swapped was a big hit this year too. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.
