If you fancy yourself skilled at the art of hacking—and have an appreciation for retro technology—the creator of this impressive Nixie Tube chess set soon plans to sell a DIY kit that’s apparently not for the faint of heart.

The set will include a giant circuit board playing surface with 64 individual transformers hidden beneath each square. These illuminate the Nixie playing pieces through wireless induction power. Players can tell their pieces apart by the different colored bases, but they’ll have to learn to distinguish the pawns from the queens using the Russian scientific symbols the Nixie Tubes display.

If Russian isn’t your native tongue, that just takes the challenge to another level. [Lasermad via Hack a Day]
