Nvidia has a new Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) specification that has a pretty good chance of becoming the first industry-wide graphics-upgrade standard for laptops. The spec defines three classes of hardware, ‘MXM I’ for ultra-portables, ‘MXM II’ for regular notebooks, and ‘MXM III’ for desktop-replacement machines, with each standard taking slightly more power and dumping slightly more heat, with the proportionate increase in graphical horsepower. So far lots of Asian laptop manufacturers have put their support behind MXM, including FIC and Clevo (who make the hot Sager-branded laptops that were some of the first to have replaceable hardware). Of course, until we see ATI getting on board, this standard might be an upgrade path for Nvidia hardware only.
