The Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. has begun a campaign collecting old cell phones. The cell phones, batteries and other accessories will be collected and recycled. How does this save said gorilla? Well, it will cut down on the mining of the coltan in the Congo. Coltan, which is short for columbite-tantalite, is a black mineral that is used to coat a variety of components on cell phones and computer chips.
