With San Diego Comic-Con around the corner, Oni Press has done something that no other comic book publisher has ever done before to promote its new series: they put it in a can.
The comic in question is FORT PSYCHO, by writer Matt Kindt (BRZRKR/MIND MGMT) and artist Brian Hurtt (The Sixth Gun). Described as Mission: Impossible meets Lost, FORT PSYCHO follows a battalion of trained killers sequestered on a tropical island, tasked with uncovering why they were sent there in the first place. That is, if their so-called teammates don’t go AWOL on them first.

So why put the comic in a can? Because inside its cylindrical and, let’s be honest, convenient sealed packaging for walking a con, is an exclusive issue of FORT PSYCHO that won’t be available to purchase anywhere else. As such, there will only be 250 cans, so it’s a get-’em-while-supplies-last affair for the $25 non-perishable comic at the Oni Press booth (#1829). In addition to the limited-edition shelf-stable comic, each can has a FORT PSYCHO short story written by Kindt printed on the label, a full-sized bumper sticker, and equally limited-edition pink army men readers can use to create their own makeshift battlefields. Should an attendee discover a gold army man inside their comic-in-a-can, they’ll win a MIND MGMT: NEW & IMPROVED #1 original art cover by Kindt. They can keep the 1:50 little gold soldier toy as a treat, too. Finding a 1:5 chrome soldier will net the lucky recipient a MIND MGMT: NEW & IMPROVED blind bag.

Here’s a trailer for FORT PSYCHO to further elucidate the comic’s “infinite bullets zero f#@cks” energy.
Here’s a more detailed synopsis on FORT PSYCHO‘s whole deal:
Ten years ago, the nation of Singapore sank into the Pacific Ocean. The underground terrorist network known as The Seven Seals took credit for the largest act of terror in human history. In the aftermath, the United Nations created a strike team of highly trained covert operatives with one mission: locate, identify, and eliminate The Seven Seals’ secretive leader. The team’s clandestine affairs were to always remain in the shadows – until their final, explosive confrontation with The Seven Seals resulted in a large-scale tragedy too bloody to cover up and too tragic to ignore.
Disgraced and disavowed by the governments that trained them, the world’s most dangerous secret agents have been convicted for their crimes and sentenced to serve time side-by-side in the one place capable of holding them: their old island headquarters, Fort Cyclone – now known in the media by the derogatory nickname “Fort Psycho.” And that’s where the official story is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.
As well as what lies in store with FORT PSYCHO‘s comic-in-a-can exclusive prequel comic:
Set on a sinking oil tanker, two teams are deployed with the same mission: retrieve “un-hackable” intel before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
For those unfortunate folks among us unable to attend SDCC and have their curiosities piqued by Oni Press’ galaxy-brained rollout for FORT PSYCHO, rest assured that you can cop yourself an issue of the regular comic when FORT PSYCHO #1 hits local comic book shops on August 5.
