Jessica Chastain had her first horror movie in years with Blumhouse’s Other Mommy, and critics and audiences were largely not feeling it.

Despite that, it made a lot of money in its first weekend. Variety reported a global take of $45.2 million. The bulk of that—$27.5 million, to be specific—was from North America, and the overall performance is impressive, given its $18 million budget. Currently, Mommy’s the worst-reviewed movie of 2026, rocking a 19% Rotten Tomatoes and D+ Cinemascore grade. Low scores can hurt plenty of movies, but that’s not always the case with horror, and in some cases, negative reception can drive people to see what all the fuss is about.

Elsewhere in horror, Resident Evil has been a quiet a moneymaker since its mid-September release. This weekend, it made $8.3 million domestic, bringing its totals to $138.5 million (domestic) and $320.3 million (global). As such, it’s now the highest-grossing movie of the entire live-action franchise, beating the previous record-holdier, 2017’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and its $314.1 worldwide box office. (By extension, it also seems to be the highest-grossing movie adaptation of a Capcom video game.)

For the horror fans, Other Mommy is joined this month by Clayface on October 23. Before that, we’ve got Street Fighter, Crawlers, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, and Whalefall (October 16), followed by Klara and the Sun, Wicker, and Wildwood (also on 10/23).
