Space suits are a powerful symbol of exploration, but Graziano Panfili uses it to separate people from their surroundings. His photos turn ordinary people in ordinary places into explorers from a distant world.
What’s particularly intriguing about Panfili’s Alienation series is that they appear to be portraits of people in settings familiar to them: their home, a hotel room, their car, their job. By putting them in the space suits, he cuts them off from the familiar and transforms them into the Other, as if these are settings they can see but never quite touch.
