Fall movies are here, and Practical Magic 2 cast the first spell of the season.
Per Variety, the legacyquel to the 1998 cult classic opened to $46 million worldwide. $30 million of that came from North America, whose love of top-billed stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman has kept them employed and in the public eye for a long time. For some comparison, Bullock’s last theatrical movie as the lead was 2022’s The Lost City, which opened to $30.5 million in its first weekend; Kidman’s last, Babygirl from late 2024, started with $7.3 million in a five-day period.
Overseas, #PracticalMagic2 also underperformed, as the spooky comedy starring #SandraBullock & #NicoleKidman grossed 16M on 5-day opening (vs #WutheringHeights’s 42M, #ItEndsWithUS’s 30M, #TheLostCity’s 20.4M, #TheHousemaid’s 18.5M) over 77 intl. markets.

The original Practical Magic was a cult classic that garnered a mixed reception, and the same’s basically true of Practical Magic 2. While it’s opened on the low end of projection, the sequel has managed a rare feat this summer in knocking Spider-Man: Brand New Day off its weekslong throne of #1 at the domestic box office. As is, the Spidey film’s made $935 million, but it’s believed that it’ll gain more in the next few days—and in turn, surpass Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing movie in domestic history.
Next up for September’s genre movies, we’ve got the long-debated Resident Evil from Zach Cregger (September 18), then Dreamworks’ Forgotten Island (September 25), with Other Mommy kicking off next month’s slate (October 9).
