Quite a few movies came out this weekend, but only one could be the top performer—and that was Street Fighter.
Per Variety, Paramount and Capcom’s martial arts movie made $51.1 million worldwide, with $30 million coming from domestic markets. Already, the global take puts it well ahead of the $12 million earned by its predecessor, 2009’s The Legend of Chun-Li and behind the $99.4 million of the 1994 film. Compared to more recent video games movies—namely, September’s Resident Evil and May’s Mortal Kombat II—this opening falls behind the former’s $103.8 million and the latter’s $60 million.
Mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike have dominated much of the online Street Fighter chatter. It may have reportedly cost just $82 million to make, but the split divide may hurt the film in the next few weeks as the month (and year) get significantly busier. Given how the film ends, it’s clear the creative team would like to do more—it’s just a matter of whether ticket or eventual viewership numbers get them there.
Between Street Fighter and the mass interest in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s You Can See Everything, how’d Whalefall do? The weekend’s other big genre flick, starring Austin “Unlucky as Hell” Abrams, made $8 million domestic and $17.5 million worldwide. Its domestic numbers are below what analysts had projected for it, but its solid impressions may help it in the long run.
Speaking of the future, next week is another packed one: Wicker, Klara and the Sun, Clayface, and Wildwood all land on October 23. Prepare your wallets!
