The scrolling shoot ’em up genre isn’t exactly known for its simplicity or ease—which is why Phoenix for iOS sounds so insanely great. Beyond the bullets-everywhere craziness, the gameplay is randomly generated each time. And endless. Pew pew.
Phoenix’s devs boast that the game’s procedural generation offers “hundreds of thousands of enemy variations,” along with “adaptive AI.” The ultimate enemy, however, is only your high score, as the $0.99 game has no actual end—a godsend for genre fans, maybe, but perhaps underwhelming for those expecting a light at the end of the bullet-riddled tunnel.
