Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) has released the first batch in a series of the government’s UFO files. Now available on the internet, the papers include a number of claimed sightings, detailed descriptions and the MOD’s assessment of each report, stretching from 1978 to 2002. Some witnesses even took the initiative to draw out what they saw in the sky. Which means, bad UFO pictures a plenty. Check out the gallery after the jump.

The documents were released because the National Archives claimed that every year, it receives a substantial number of freedom of information requests for the UFO documents. It was decided to release the ‘historic files’ online. Over the next three years, the MOD will continue to release more and more information online.

And just to make things clear, MOD explained that each of these reports were researched primarily to:

Establish whether UK airspace may have been compromised by hostile of unauthorized military activity….The Ministry of Defence has no other interest or role regarding UFO matters and does not consider questions regarding the existence or otherwise of extraterrestrial life-forms.

For one month you will be able to download the files for free at the National Archives website. [BBC via MOD]
