If you haven’t heard of 99 Nights in the Forest, you may not be a big Roblox aficionado. It’s one of the most popular titles on the platform with nearly 26 billion lifetime visits, and it’s about to have its profile raised even higher with a feature film written by Josh Cooley. His previous credits include directing Transformers One and the Oscar-winning Toy Story 4 as well as co-writing Inside Out.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Cooley’s involvement, describing the project as a live-action adaptation.
There’s not yet a director attached to 99 Nights in the Forest, but there’s a producer aboard all horror fans are familiar with: Sam Raimi. While 99 Nights in the Forest is described by the trade as a game in which “players must endure 99 nights in a haunted forest while attempting to rescue four lost children and fight the vicious creatures inhabiting the deep woods,” it’s rated with “minimal” maturity on Roblox, with “occasional/mild” fear and violence.
So the game, at least, is hardly in Evil Dead territory in terms of squishy potential. But that “surviving the woods” theme rings familiar, and having Raimi and his longtime creative partner Rob Tapert aboard is certainly a boost to the title’s horror cred.
The movie’s executive producers include the developers Alec Kieft, Matthew Hufton, and Cameron Angland of the New Zealand-based Grandma’s Favourite Games, as well as Raimi and Taper’s Ghost House Pictures cohorts Romel Adam and Jose Cañas.
