Sleep tracking gadgets and apps can be invaluable, health-boosting tools. The trouble is that you need to remember to use them, which often involves wearing a wristable to bed. Samsung’s new Sleepsense tracker helps fix this problem by hiding the tracker under your mattress.

It appears to be just that simple. Put the little puck under your mattress, pair it with your phone, and go to sleep. It’s not clear whether the device is smart enough to turn itself on or whether you need to actually activate it, but either way, getting the sleep tracker out of asight is a smart idea.

As described by Samsung, the new gadget actually does a lot—it does more than you would logically think a gadget buried under your bed could do, tracking heart-rate and respiratory rates. How? Neat.

The new sensor also tracks metrics that are perhaps less surprising. These are pretty easy to figure out from your movement, or lack thereof. From the post on Samsung’s website:

total sleep time, sleep efficiency, time it took to fall asleep, number of times you woke up, number of times you got out of bed, percentage of time in REM (rapid eye movement) and percentage of time in deep sleep.

The tracker has a number of clever features. It has a smart alarm which uses your phone to wake you up gradually, using data about your sleep to figure out when is the precise moment in your sleep cycle to wake you up. This isn’t a unique feature but it’s a nice touch. There’s also a “family care” option, so you can keep track of the sleep of relatives you might be worried about—not to be morbid, but tracking old folks is just as important as tracking babies sometimes.

Overall, this seems like a useful gadget that will make people’s lives better.
