When you try to imagine what it will be like to live in the future, you might imagine flying cars, robotic butlers, or floating beds. Will we grow our own food? Will TVs still exist? How will we turn the lights on? Seriously, what will our future homes look and feel like? In a few weeks, Gizmodo—with the help and support of Verizon Wireless and Netflix—will show you.
From May 17 to May 21, Gizmodo will kick off the summer with the Home of the Future, an immersive, real-life vision of the urban home of tomorrow.
As part of NYCxDESIGN, we will be custom-building an apartment—designed by Brooklyn-based Bernheimer Architecture—in an old gymnasium in Soho, and we will be filling it with a range of life-simplifying and energy-saving innovations, from cutting edge kitchenware to virtual entertainment and everything in between.
In the Gizmodo Home of the Future, which will be open to the public with free internet access for all, visitors will find both the most accessible and most aspirational technologies of today for enhancing our homes now and in the future. And the Home of the Future is more than just a physical space: it's a cavalry of ideas that stand to change the way we live.
As such, we're also inviting the region's architecture buffs, design enthusiasts, tech innovators, and urban futurists to visit the Home of the Future, where we'll be hosting a series of live public events, including workshops, demos, meet-ups, film screenings, and more.
The space will be memorably soundtracked with an epic, handpicked playlist of futuristic ambience from our friends at Other Music, and we'll even premiere an exclusive new beer of the future, using experimental hops, brewed for us by the mad scientists at Sixpoint.
Stay tuned—you don't want to miss it.
