Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex is a new documentary about the artistic wizards who ruled cinema in the pre-CG days. It’s full of big names, including Rick Baker, Jon Landis, Joe Dante, and Guillermo del Toro. But the most famous faces that appear in the trailer are far more fantastical.

That’s because they’re the creations of the people who figured out how to bring them to the screen in a convincingly lifelike fashion: Hellboy, the possessed Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist, the Alien, Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs, the Gremlins, Slimer, Yoda, and more, glimpsed in what looks to be some pretty amazing behind-the-scenes footage.

“I think we need monsters to explain the world, because without them, we cannot explain our place in the universe,” del Toro muses in the preview, and he’s right. (We also need monsters because monster movies are freaking awesome, but that’s understood, of course.)

Creature Designers: The Frankenstein Complex is currently making the festival rounds; check out its Facebook page for updates.
