It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s…a flying monk? Artist Li Wei defies gravity in his performance art pieces, apparently taking to the sky on a cloud of pink smoke. But there’s more to Li’s work than incense-powered rocket shoes.

Li blends performance art and photography to create these strange, mystical images, and employs a host of tricks, including wires, scaffolding, mirrors, and acrobatics to create his high-flying illusions. Many of Li’s photographs feature his subjects falling or precariously balanced, but this particular smokey trick was actually performed live over the Fontaine of Lyons at La Villette in Paris. The monk’s garb is a lovely touch, as if Li was somehow able to perform this odd stunt by achieving enlightenment rather than through mechanical tricks.
