Some 150 years after his death, a man is being pardoned for helping slaves escape. Samuel Burris, a free black man, was tried and found guilty in 1847—but spared his sentence (being sold into seven years of slavery) by an anti-slavery group who bought him and freed him, after which he returned to his post on the Underground Railroad. His pardon will come Nov. 2, the date of his conviction, along with a historical marker commemorating his bravery and heroism. [WMC Action News 5]
