In 2008, coming off of the backs of the Matrix trilogy, the Wachowskis took a direction no one expected: a dazzling, post-modern adaptation of the classic ’60s anime Speed Racer that quickly became one of the best cult classics of the modern age. But now you will be able to revisit it not just on the big screen but in UHD with a worthy new remaster.
Warner Bros. has teamed up with Flashback Cinema to re-release the remastered Speed Racer across 225 US theaters in the last week of April, letting fans see the restored film before it heads home on 4K UHD Blu-ray and for a digital release in May. As well as the film itself, the home release will come with a slew of special features, including a new behind-the-scenes look featuring the Wachowskis reflecting on their choice to pivot from the world of The Matrix to a rainbow dreamscape take on Tatsuo Yoshida’s legendary anime. If there’s a film worthy of a great new remaster, Speed Racer is definitely it—especially getting to see those wild racers and all those saturated colors really pop on the big screen again. The new 4K release of Speed Racer will release on May 19, after its brief theatrical run beginning the week of April 25.
