In Stephen King’s 1972 story “Battleground,” a hitman ends up in a deadly battle against against a troop of toy soldiers, and in 1986, a Soviet animation studio turned it into a strangely lovely piece of science fiction noir.

Animator Mikhail Titov made this adaptation of “Battleground” at the Kiev-based studio Kievnauchfilm. The mix of shadow and color, rotoscoping and cartoony designs all go a long way to turning this tale into an animated nightmare.
