This guy made a mobile internet access box using a Verizon EVDO card, a Wi-Fi router, and some of that Linux stuff. He’s calling it the ‘StompBox,’ and if you think about it, it’s sort of brilliant—and sort of mystifying why Verizon isn’t selling something similar already. Since Verizon already sells its high-speed 3G cellular data service as a ‘business’ option—$80 a month—you’d think there would be a great opportunity to sell ‘mobile office anywhere’ service using a generic EVDO box with Wi-Fi. It’s certainly fast enough.
Anyway, Verizon didn’t and this chap did, so good for him. Even better, in the spirit of sharing, he’s posted up the whole story and details on his site. This picture is of the inside, by the way—it does fit in a nice case.
