One of the big obstacles preventing Microsoft's Surface from being successful has been the fact that it's only available direct from Microsoft. Not any more: by the end of the week, the tablet should be available from Staples and Best Buy.

ZDNet initially reported the news, which has now been confirmed by the websites of both Best Buy and Staples. Yahoo claims that Surface will be on sale at Staples from today, while Best Buy simply claims the tablet is "coming soon".

Given the amount of promotion that Surface has seen, it's so far been fairly tricky to get hold of one. Changing that before Christmas is obviously Microsoft's best bet—but it seems likely that it's too little, too late. [ZDNet, Yahoo, Best Buy]
