This fully-immersive 3D version of The Night Café, by Brooklyn animator Mackenzie Cauley, will give you a good sense of what it would be like to live inside a Van Gogh painting.

Cauley compiled the piece as part of a competition challenging developers to devise innovative uses of virtual reality. This re-imagining is meant to be used with a VR headset like Oculus Rift (download link here) — but this video should still give you a sense of what the immersive experience is like.

New Scientist explains how it was done:

The virtual diorama was made by painstakingly picking apart the elements of the original painting then digitising them with the help of 3D software. To fill the parts of the room that weren’t visible in the original 2D, s few extras were then added, such as a piano player performing near the bar. Cauley also softened the distorted perspective so that people wouldn’t feel seasick while wandering through the scene.
