Crumbs under the high chair and dog hair on the stairs are five-minute jobs, the kind you do right away when the vacuum weighs 5.6 pounds and has no cord to unwind. That is the case for the Dyson V8, and the V8 Cordless drops from $389.99 to $269.99 on Amazon for Prime members, 31% off, as an early Prime Big Deal Days offer.

115 Air Watts in a 5.6-Pound Vacuum

Suction is rated at 115 air watts, and it goes through the Motorbar cleaner head, which Dyson says deep cleans all floor types. Its best trick is detangling: the head clears long hair and pet hair from the brush bar as you go, so you are not sitting on the floor with scissors after every second session. That is the feature I’d pay for in a house with a dog or with anyone who has long hair. Two power modes are available, one for everyday cleaning and a stronger one for the rug that needs it.

Weight is the other argument. At 5.6 pounds the V8 can be carried upstairs in one hand and lifted to reach a curtain rail or the top of a bookshelf. The wand comes off to turn it into a handheld, the form you would use on car seats, stair treads or a sofa, and Dyson includes a crevice tool for edges and narrow gaps. I’ll admit this is what would win me over: a vacuum that is easy to grab gets used more often.

The battery gives up to 40 minutes of cleaning, with power that Dyson describes as fade-free, meaning suction stays constant until the charge runs out. The V8 runs while you hold the trigger and stops when you let go, which saves energy every time you move a chair or walk to the next room. In practice, 40 minutes covers an apartment or a full floor of a house on one charge.

Filtration covers the whole machine and traps 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, according to Dyson, so fine dust and allergens stay in the vacuum and the air that comes out is cleaner. The bin holds 0.14 gallons, about half a liter, a compact size that goes with the low weight. Dyson builds the V8 from materials chosen to be both light and durable, and backs it with a 2-year limited warranty and lifetime support.

Three V8 styles share the page and this one has the lowest price: the Dyson V8 Cordless is $269.99 instead of $389.99 on Amazon as an exclusive Prime price, under the Early Prime Big Deal label. The other two listings, V8 and V8 Plus, are at $405.61 and $459.95, and returns are free.
