It’s been 20 years since the last Mortal Kombat film, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, got an exceedingly tepid reception at the box office. But the video game is still incredibly popular, and the next film has big name James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7, Aquaman) on board to produce. Now we know who’s directing.

Well, sort of. We have a name, Simon McQuoid, and a resumé courtesy of Variety:

McQuoid is an Australian filmmaker and one of the most in-demand commercials directors in the business, working on high-profile campaigns for PlayStation, Halo, Range Rover, Beats by Dre, and other top brands. His commercial work has earned him a Grand Clio, a D&AD Pencil, and a GRANDY Award, among others.

His experience making big-budget commercials will come in very handy while helming Mortal Kombat, a film that will no doubt hinge mostly on flashy action scenes and special effects. No other information was given about the project, other than what Wan has said previously, but if there’s not a ripping 1990s-style techno soundtrack, there’ll be hell to pay.
