The scoreboard now reads Dune: Part Three – 2, Avengers: Doomsday – 0. That is, if you had a scoreboard counting the number of full trailers released for massive Hollywood sci-fi sequels opening on December 18 this year. While fans have yet to see much of what’s up over at Marvel, director Denis Villeneuve just released the second trailer for Dune: Part Three, the thrilling conclusion to his Dune saga, and it looks truly wonderful.
Seventeen years have passed since we saw Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) defeat the Emperor and become ruler of the galaxy. Now, torn between his love, Chani (Zendaya), and his wife, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), Paul has more than just the weight of the world on his shoulders. Check out Villeneuve’s second trailer for Dune: Part Three.
Dune: Part Three is based on Frank Herbert’s second Dune book, Dune Messiah (the first book was split into two movies, if you remember). It’s a much more cerebral story as Paul not only deals with his home life, including two new kids, but also various threats to his supremacy. He’ll also struggle with the introduction of Hayt, basically a clone of his childhood mentor and friend Duncan Idaho. Can Hayt be trusted as Duncan was?
And of course that’s just a small taste, as you can see from this wild trailer. Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, and Charlotte Rampling reprise their roles from the previous films. Anya Taylor-Joy revives her prior cameo as Paul’s sister, while Robert Pattinson joins as one of the many trying to take Paul from the throne. Which is exactly what he’s doing in The Odyssey too, right? Oh R-Patz.
We’ll have much more on Dune: Part Three soon. But, for now, you can read about its opening sequence here and grab some tickets to see the movie on December 18. Check out the poster below. Your move, Marvel.
