Follow-ups to the highest-grossing movie of all time were originally slated to start coming out next year. But recent statements by director James Cameron disclosed that there’d be a delay for the coming wave of Avatar sequels. Now we know the exact dates that Cameron and his team are aiming for, starting with December 18, 2020.
Today, on the franchise’s official Facebook page, an update mentioned concurrent production of four Avatar movies, with the apparent intent to make these films a winter holiday tradition much like Disney has done with Star Wars:
Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!
News on the sci-fi action franchise has been ramping up lately, with stars Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver saying that production will be beginning in the summer or fall. We’ve also gotten glimpses of the planned theme park attraction and the animatronics that will live inside it. Film production is a complicated, many-headed beast, especially when the stakes and ambition are so high. These release dates may change yet again but, for now, these are what we’ve got.
