Live from Pinewood Studios, director Sam Mendes revealed the cast and title for the 24th James Bond movie. Coming November 6, 2015 is Spectre. We also got confirmation of some new cast members: Christoph Waltz, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux. Spoilers in the form of speculation and rumor below!
Well, that certainly sounds like we'll be seeing Daniel Craig's James Bond tangle with the global terrorist group SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion). As an organization, it's MI-6's main nemesis in the Bond universe, and we first saw in on film in Dr. No. All of which means "Spectre" is not a word you just throw around lightly when making a Bond movie. Even though Mendes said he "couldn't comment" on that.
In addition to the cast list, which we'll get into in a bit, Mendes reported that filming, which starts Monday, will take place in London, Mexico City, Morocco, Erfoud, Rome, and the Austrian Alps. And the official car is the Aston Martin DB-10.
Joining returning castmates Rory Kinnear, Ben Whishaw, Naomi Harris, Ralph Fiennes, and Daniel Craig are: Christoph Waltz, Andrew Scott, Dave Bautista, Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux. Most of those names are confirmations of rumors we've been hearing for a while. Dave Bautisa is supposedly going to play a henchman in the vein of Jaws and Oddjob. He was announced as playing "Mr. Hinx," which fits that model. The same rumor has Seydoux as the requisite femme fatale. Her character name is "Madeleine Swann."
Andrew Scott was introduced as a "new addiction to the Whitehall family" named Denbigh. Given his most famous role as Moriarty, there's every chance he's a traitor. Monica Belluci's character was announced as being named "Lucia Sciarra."
Conspicuously, Christoph Waltz's character name wasn't revealed with everyone else's, which (along with the title) lends more credence to the rumors that he'll be playing Ernst Stavro Blofeld. According to the press release and the official twitter, his character name is Oberhauser. And, of course, Waltz showed up to the announcement with hair. So the press release could be telling the truth. Or, as filming hasn't started yet, they could be trying to throw us all off the scent. In a post-John Harrison world, anything's possible.
Watch the announcement and make your own guesses. It's below, cued to where the actual event begins, around the 3 hour mark:
