The Secret Ingredient in this Bird Whistle Is Salami

As anyone who has whistled through a blade of grass can tell you, a simple wind instrument can be made of just about anything. But Rulof Maker took “anything” to its logical conclusion by creating this bird whistle from the casing of a dried Italian sausage.

In this simple project, the sausage casing and a small piece of paper are held together by a bent metal washer. The meaty reed vibrates against the paper (and the roof of your mouth), creating some pretty impressive mock bird calls, as long as you don’t accidentally swallow it.

Birds are neat and all, but is anyone else jonesing for a sandwich?
