We celebrated Jeff VanderMeer's novel Annihilation as a weird science novel that's actually weird enough, and an antidote to J.J. Abrams-style mysteries. Now, the movie version has gotten a writer/director who can handle some weirdness: Alex Garland.

Garland is probably best known as a collaborator of director Danny Boyle, having written Boyle's films 28 Days Later, Sunshine and The Beach. He also wrote the scripts for Dredd and Never Let Me Go. And he just made his debut as a director with Ex Machina, the sexy A.I. thriller whose trailer we shared yesterday.
So fingers crossed Garland can do justice to the layered, intense weirdness of VanderMeer's novel. He's set to direct as well as write the adaptation of Annihilation. [Variety]
