The male frogs will shuffle back and forth while perched on a rock to catch the attention of a female frog. They’ll bob their heads and nod before calls, or inflate one air sac but not the other. And in a failed effort to look casual, they’ll quietly raise one hand in a nonchalant wave.

The Brazilian scientists did come across one move unique to the frog kingdom. As awkward as the courtship looks to us, the female seems to like it. In a behavior never before observed among frogs, she’ll touch the male, and make certain visual displays, in order to get him to initiate his dance. Check it out:
