For what little time he graced the screen in The Phantom Menace, any sort of emotion that wasn’t “stoic” or “oh crap I just got chopped in half” was rarely seen on the visage of Darth Maul. However, this new figuarts toy from Bandai looks so wonderfully demented, it makes for a lovely figure.
The latest in Bandai’s line of expensive, yet wonderfully pretty and very articulated Star Wars toys, Maul is pretty much the first character that really makes use of all the crazy figuarts articulation. You don’t ever really see Luke, Vader and Stormtroopers doing elaborate flips (I guess Luke gets his occasional twirl during the Sail Barge fight) and kicks and twirls or what have you, but that’s basically Maul’s modus operandi outside of standing still and looking mean. And the figure can pull said poses off pretty well!
Hopefully he’ll have a stand so you can actually keep him in these poses without fearing him taking a plummet off the side of your desk or something.
But the best thing about this new Darth Maul is him coming with not one, but two faces — his usually emotionless glower and the slightly manic alternate head. I love that it’s not just gritted teeth bare but his left eye looks like it’s twitched juuust a little. It looks so wonderfully demented, and gives the figure a great bit of character.
That said, how great would it be if you could separate it at the waist though?
Bandai’s Figuarts Darth Maul will be out in September in Japan, for 5,960 yen — or around $50.
